Public art is often under-appreciated but murals can help create a sense of identity for cities. Neighborhoods with murals foster attachment to one’s community and are attractive to families with children.  Studies show that art, parks, and green spaces rank higher than education, safety, and economy on a citizen’s sense of attachment.  In areas where there is rampant vandalism, a mural can be an effective deterrent as walls painted with murals are less likely to be tagged out of respect for the art.  In pedestrian areas, murals can be painted to slow down foot traffic and encourage increased sales.  In fact, public art is a driving factor in a city’s economy.  Although it’s difficult to monetize the impact of public art on a city, the social and cultural effects are extremely valuable.  It’s an essential tool in making a city unique and attractive to new businesses and young professionals.
